Training focuses on safety, technical skills, and best practices for municipal processes and operations as it relates to water system maintenance and repair.

Water Leak Detection (24 Hours)

A water distribution system is usually a utility’s largest investment and largest challenge with hundreds or thousands of miles of pipes in the ground. The people who perform leak detection play an important role by making early warnings possible. Timely leak detection helps to maintain lower water loss rate and to save thousands of dollars every year. Upon completion of this course the participant will demonstrate a technical knowledge of the concepts, policies and procedures associated with water leak detection including the following concepts:

  • Techniques for detecting non-surfacing leaks
  • Discussion and investigation of various leak detection equipment
  • Discussion of factors that affect leak sounds
  • Actions that should be taken once a surfacing leak has been located
  • Discussion of factors that affect the type of corrective action that will be taken

Water Main and Service Line Maintenance and Repair (24 Hours)

Leaks in a municipality’s water distribution system can be extremely costly. Fast and effective repairs play an important role in keeping these costs down. Upon completion of this course, the participant will demonstrate a technical knowledge of the concepts, processes and procedures associated with water main and service line maintenance and repair including how to:

  • Repair a water leak in a meter
  • Repair a water leak in a service line
  • Perform a repair after a water main break
  • Install water main line fittings
  • Flush lines for residual, taste and odor
  • Perform a tap on a water main
  • Repair a service line leak in a street
  • Disinfect water lines after repairs are made

Water Hydrant Maintenance and Repair (16 Hours)

Why perform water valve maintenance?  The answer is to ensure that the valve is in the open position, that is actually works, and most importantly, that the City can count on it when it is needed. Maintaining valves is one of the most important procedures that city workers perform.  A water hydrant is a type of valve. A hydrant that is operating properly can mean the difference between whether or not a burning structure is saved or lost. Upon completion of this course, the participant will demonstrate a technical knowledge of the concepts, processes and procedures associated with water valve and hydrant maintenance and repair including the following topics:

  • Raise a hydrant to grade level
  • Install a new water hydrant
  • Perform a traffic flange repair
  • Disassemble and reassemble a hydrant
  • Troubleshoot, maintain and inspect a valve / hydrant
  • The important functions of a water valve
  • Important steps for developing an effective valve maintenance program
  • The use of shop drawings as a reference when performing valve maintenance
  • How to properly turn off the water prior to repair
  • How to perform flow tests
  • How to repair and replace water valve parts

Water Hydrant Repair (4 Hours)

Successful completers of this workshop will be able to:

  • Raise a hydrant to grade level
  • Install a new water hydrant
  • Perform a traffic flange repair
  • Disassemble and reassemble a hydrant
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and inspect a hydrant

Water Leak Detection (4 Hours)

Participants in this workshop will:

  • Learn techniques for detecting non-surface leaks
  • Discuss and investigate various leak detection equipment
  • Discuss factors that affect leak sounds
